Central America's long-haul map just changed. In September, the Spanish airline Iberojet began operating in El Salvador, its first flight from Madrid landing and its first departure to Barcelona taking off on the same day. Barcelona is now a direct destination from El Salvador for the first time ever.
Behind the new routes is something even more important. El Salvador and Spain updated their bilateral aviation framework, doubling permitted frequencies from seven to fourteen per week for each country. That doesn't mean fourteen flights operate tomorrow, but it raises the ceiling for growth. Through Madrid and Barcelona, all of Europe just got closer to Central America.
Why European travelers matter
European visitors are among the most valuable travelers a destination can attract. They stay longer, often two to three weeks. They spend more per trip, and they travel in seasons that complement North American demand. A German couple spending three weeks across El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras is worth several short-stay visitors.
They also book differently. European travelers are heavy users of Booking.com and plan far in advance, which means properties that are visible on European-dominated channels, with bookable inventory months out, capture this demand first, while properties relying on walk-ins and word of mouth miss it.
What this means for the region
El Salvador is the entry point, but the effects ripple outward. A European traveler who flies into San Salvador for a surf trip in El Tunco is a short hop from Copán, Antigua, or the Bay Islands. Multi-country itineraries are the natural shape of European travel in Central America, and every new direct flight from Europe makes those itineraries easier to sell.
For Honduras specifically, the math is encouraging. better European connectivity to the region plus growing airlift into Roatán adds up to a steadily widening funnel of international visitors.
Getting ready before demand arrives
New source markets reward properties that are ready before the demand arrives. Recama puts your property on the channels European travelers actually use, with Booking.com sync at the core, so when that Madrid flight lands full of travelers planning a three-week Central American route, your rooms are right there, bookable, with rates that reflect the opportunity. The flights are coming. Make sure you're on the shelf when they do.
