Honduras Is Headed for a Record $840 Million Tourism Year

Tourism Minister Andrés Ehrler now projects the country will close 2026 with between $820 and $840 million in tourism revenue, up from $780 million last year, after visitor arrivals grew more than 18% in the first half of the year.

For a sector that supports more than 300,000 direct jobs, it is the clearest signal yet that Honduran tourism has moved from recovery to genuine expansion.

What's driving the record

Cruises are surging. Cruise arrivals are up more than 19%, with over 100 ships added to Honduran routes this year. The Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja) are absorbing most of that growth, and the economic spillover reaches far beyond the ports: transport operators, restaurants, dive shops, and artisans all benefit.

Air connectivity keeps building. Four new frequencies from Canada to Roatán are coming for the winter season, adding to existing service from Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. Every new flight brings high-spending travelers who stay longer and spend more than the average visitor.

Domestic tourism is massive. This week's Morazán holiday is moving an estimated 500,000 Honduran travelers around the country, generating some 600 million lempiras across hotels, restaurants, transport, and tour operators. When half a million of your own citizens travel in a single week, under the banner "Salí y quédate en Honduras", that's a domestic market most countries would envy.

The opportunity for properties

Record demand rewards the prepared. The properties that capture this wave will share a few traits: they're visible on the channels where travelers book, their rates move with demand instead of sitting static, and they convert lookers into bookers with strong reviews and fast responses.

The flip side is just as real. Demand this strong exposes every weak link. An outdated listing, a slow reply, or a property that is invisible on the platforms where Canadians and cruise passengers plan their trips loses out. Growth doesn't distribute itself evenly; it flows to whoever is easiest to find and book.
