Copán's Río Amarillo Airstrip Returns: Flights From November

3 min readLeer en español

Copán is about to get much closer. Honduras plans to reopen the Río Amarillo airstrip for local flights starting November 1, 2026, which would cut the trip from San Pedro Sula to the Maya ruins down to about 40 minutes.

President Nasry Asfura announced the plan on September 6 in Copán, and Tourism Minister Andrés Ehrler confirmed the November 1 target date, pending technical approvals and weather, as La Tribuna reported. CM Airlines is the designated operator for a San Pedro Sula to Río Amarillo route with three weekly frequencies: Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, aimed squarely at weekend tourism.

An airstrip with history

Río Amarillo has history. The aerodrome in Santa Rita, Copán, was inaugurated in March 2015 at a cost of more than 335 million lempiras, built to open air access to the Copán archaeological park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. But it never took off commercially. Only 27 flights operated between 2015 and 2021, and the facility sat largely under military guard with irregular maintenance.

The infrastructure itself is sound. The runway (18/36) measures 1,400 by 30 meters of hydraulic concrete at 712 meters elevation, designed for daytime visual operations with regional turboprops. The ATR 42 was the design aircraft, though initial operations may use smaller 19-seat aircraft. The field carries IATA code RUY and ICAO code MHRU, and sits 15 to 20 kilometers from the ruins, according to Aviaciónline's detailed report.

Private aircraft and helicopters will also be allowed, and Ehrler publicly invited tour operators to build the connection into their packages. Links to Tegucigalpa and Guatemala are contemplated for the medium term, El País reported.

Why 40 minutes changes everything

Today, reaching Copán means roughly 180 kilometers by road from San Pedro Sula, and nearly eight hours from Tegucigalpa. That distance has always filtered the market toward the determined traveler.

A 40 to 45 minute flight rewrites the map. Weekend trips from San Pedro Sula become easy. International visitors landing in San Pedro Sula can add Copán as a two-day extension without an exhausting road journey. Tour operators can finally sell Copán the way they sell other major Maya sites, as an easy add-on rather than an expedition.

There is a precedent nearby. When Roatán's airlift expanded, the island's hotel market transformed within two seasons. More flights meant more travel advisors willing to sell it, which meant fuller houses at better rates. Copán holds the stronger cultural asset, with a UNESCO designation no beach can match. The only thing it ever lacked was the flight.

What it means for your property

If you operate anywhere in western Honduras, start planning now, before the first flight lands:

  • Pre-sell round-trip private transport. The flight solves the air leg, but every arriving traveler still needs ground transport from Río Amarillo to your door. Partner with local private transport and taxi companies now, and sell the round-trip transfer as part of the booking. A room plus a confirmed ride waiting at the airstrip is a package nobody else in the region can currently offer, and it turns the new flight into direct revenue.
  • Prepare for the weekend wave. Three weekly frequencies aimed at weekend tourism means Friday to Sunday demand spikes. Staff, stock, and price for it.
  • Update your listings. "40 minutes from San Pedro Sula by air" belongs in your Booking.com description, your website, and your Google profile the week flights start. Travelers cannot book what they do not know exists.

Western Honduras is opening up
