US Travel Agencies Just Had Their Biggest Air Sales Month Ever

US travel agencies sold a record $9.8 billion in air tickets in August 2026, up 19% from August 2025, according to Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC). Passenger trips reached 25.8 million, up 5% year over year, in what ARC called the strongest August in its records.

What the numbers show

The August figures, released September 17, 2026, beat the previous August record set just a year earlier. Sales were also up 2% from July 2026, extending a strong summer run. International trips totaled 9.3 million and US domestic trips 16.5 million, each up 5% from August 2025.

The average ticket price climbed 17% year over year to $624. Economy tickets averaged $569, up 17%, while premium-class tickets averaged $1,454, up 11%. ARC chief commercial officer Steve Solomon said the totals reflected the continued strength of the US travel market, with strong June and July trends carrying into August.

Fares are doing the heavy lifting

Trips grew 5% while sales grew 19%. The gap is fares. Travelers are flying slightly more and paying notably more per ticket, which points to a US consumer still willing to spend on travel even as prices rise. For hotels, that matters: a traveler who just paid 17% more for a flight is a traveler with a real trip budget, not someone hunting only for the cheapest bed.

The agency channel is modernizing

NDC transactions accounted for 21.5% of ARC-settled transactions in August, a sign of how much booking volume now flows through modern airline-direct retailing channels. The travel agency is changing shape, selling more premium product through newer booking channels.

If you work with US travel advisors, or want to start, this is your opening. Advisors are booking more expensive trips through better tools, and they need hotels that answer quickly, honor agency rates, and make their clients look good. A simple, reliable agency relationship can put your property into itineraries you will never see being built. Net rates, fast confirmations, no surprises at check-in.

Reading the fare signal

A 17% jump in average fares changes how travelers choose everything after the flight. When the flight costs more, the hotel decision gets more careful, not cheaper. Travelers protect the trip they already paid for by picking lodging they trust: strong reviews, clear photos, flexible cancellation. This is the moment to hold rate and add visible value. A better cancellation policy, a breakfast inclusion, or a late checkout costs you little and means a lot to someone who just spent $624 on a ticket.

Watch the premium cabin number too. Premium tickets up 11% to $1,454 means the top of the market is moving. Even if your property is not luxury, the travelers in that segment set expectations for service quality that trickle down to every review they write.

What it means for your property

A record US summer for air sales is a leading indicator for international leisure demand in the months that follow. Americans who booked flights in August are planning trips for the fall and winter, which is exactly the high season for Honduras and the Bay Islands. Properties that are visible and bookable on the channels US travelers use, with rates that reflect strong demand, are positioned to capture their share.

One practical next step is to make sure your rooms appear wherever those travelers are shopping. Recama keeps your property synchronized across Booking.com, Airbnb, and your direct channel from one place, so the demand showing up in reports like ARC's can actually find you.
