Luxury Travelers Are Trading Summer for Fall, Virtuoso Reports

Luxury travelers are quietly moving their vacations out of summer. At its 38th annual Virtuoso Travel Week in August 2026, the luxury travel network reported that autumn bookings are up 59 percent and autumn sales up 69 percent, with September sales alone up 77 percent. Fall is becoming the new peak season for high-end travel.

The luxury numbers

Virtuoso's network is on pace for a nearly 21 percent increase in year-over-year sales, with the US origin market up 21 percent. Hotels are leading the growth at 25 percent, followed by cruises at 22 percent.

The most striking figure is at the top end. Bookings at hotels charging $1,500 or more per night rose 37 percent, more than twice the rate of lower-priced properties. Luxury international hotels now average $1,653 a night, up from $985 in 2019. The luxury traveler is traveling more and spending dramatically more per night than before the pandemic.

Virtuoso also flagged the trends shaping that spending. It coined "city-maxxing" for multi-city itineraries, noting that roughly one in two crosses an international border. Longevity tourism and wellness are breakout segments, with wellness bookings up 28 percent. And 74 percent of Virtuoso's travel advisors now use AI in their businesses. Trip planning is changing fast.

Why fall, and why it matters to you

Several forces are pushing luxury travel into autumn. Summer in many top destinations has become uncomfortably hot and crowded. Remote and flexible work lets affluent travelers choose their months. And shoulder-season pricing lets a luxury trip feel even more exclusive, because the same properties host fewer crowds. Exclusivity without the peak-season price tag is a strong offer.

For a Central American property, this is a calendar opportunity. Your high season has traditionally been the North American winter. The "fallcation" trend extends the booking window earlier, into September, October, and November. Those are months when your occupancy is often soft and your rates are flexible. That is exactly when a luxury traveler looking for space and value pays attention.

How to catch the fall luxury traveler

First, package for the segment. Wellness, multi-destination itineraries, and longevity-themed experiences are what this traveler is buying. Sell the restorative week, not just the room. Name the outcome in the package title so the traveler recognizes it instantly.

Second, be present where luxury is booked. Virtuoso advisors, not just OTAs, move this demand. Make sure your property is visible and bookable on the channels luxury travelers and their advisors actually use, with photography and descriptions that match the price point.

Third, hold your nerve on rate. The data shows luxury travelers are the least price-sensitive segment in travel right now. Discounting to fill a soft October week can cost you more in positioning than it gains in occupancy.

Wellness is the hook

Wellness deserves its own mention. It is the fastest-growing luxury subsegment in the Virtuoso data, with bookings up 28 percent. You do not need a destination spa to participate. Clean air, quiet nights, good food, and guided experiences in nature already deliver most of what wellness travelers are buying. What they pay a premium for is intention. A property that designs the stay around restoration, rather than just renting a room. A simple, well-described wellness package, even a modest one, signals to this traveler that you understand what they came for.
