Airbnb's data on summer 2026 points to a clear shift: Americans planned trips around hobbies, not just destinations. The company called them "playcations," and the highest US booking growth showed up near golf courses, lakefronts, and surf spots.
Trips built around an activity
The defining pattern of the summer was the activity-first trip. Instead of picking a city and then finding things to do, travelers picked the hobby (golf, surfing, boating, fishing) and then booked a stay near it. Airbnb's summer trends coverage, which circulated in mid-July 2026, flagged this as the season's dominant behavior, with named hotspots including North Carolina's Outer Banks for surf; Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, for golf; and Saugatuck, Michigan, and Osage Beach, Missouri, for boating.
Closer, cheaper, more rural
Budget pressure shaped the season too. About one-third of Americans said they would stay closer to home this summer, and 86% expressed interest in rural getaways, rising to 94% among Gen Z, according to Airbnb and Focaldata survey data. Gen Z also drove a nostalgia wave, with searches for destinations that defined 2016 up more than 20% year over year. AmEx Travel and Mastercard data echoed the same move toward experience-led, shorter-haul trips.
How to package the playcation
You do not need a golf course on site to win this trend. You need to be findable by the activity. Three practical moves:
- Put the activity in your listing title and first photo caption. "10 minutes from the surf break at..." beats "comfortable rooms in..." for this traveler.
- Partner with one local operator and offer a simple two- or three-day package. A surf instructor, a boat captain, or a trail guide will do. You do not need complex software for this. A fixed price, a WhatsApp confirmation, and a reliable partner are enough.
- Photograph the activity, not just the room. Your fifth photo should be the lake, the wave, or the trail, because that is what the playcation traveler is shopping for.
Smaller properties have an edge here. A 12-room lodge near a lake can feel like the trip itself in a way a 200-room city hotel cannot.
One more move costs nothing. Answer the question the playcation traveler is really asking, "what will I do all day?" A short, honest list of three to five activities within 30 minutes of your door, with realistic times and prices, does more for conversion than another paragraph about your comfortable beds. Travelers do not need you to be an activity operator. They need you to be the reason the activity is easy.
What it means for your property
The playcation trend is good news for small properties outside the big resort zones. A lodge near a lake, a surf break, a golf course, or a trail system is exactly what this traveler is searching for. The lesson is packaging: don't just sell the room. Sell the activity around it. Name the surf spot, the lake, the trailhead in your listing. Travelers searching "stay near" plus an activity will find you before they find a generic hotel in the nearest city.
It also reinforces why being on Airbnb matters for small hotels, not just vacation rentals. When the trip starts with an activity search, the platform where that search happens is where you need to appear. Recama syncs your property across Airbnb, Booking.com, and your direct channel from one place, so an activity-driven traveler can book you wherever the search begins.
